They threatened and harmed British customs officials trying to collect the taxes. In 1770, The Boston Massacre occurred as British troops fired into a group of protesters. This was the first bloodshed. In 1775, George Washington was named Commander in Chief of the newly organized army and war began. After many fierce battles—some lost, some won—the British signed Articles of Peace 11/30/1782. Washington resigned as Commander 12/23/1783.
