He was wounded twice and taken prisoner. When he was discharged, he was given $2.67, his pay for his time in the service. Battle of Shiloh: The Battle of Shiloh was a two-day battle, April 6-7, 1862. Twenty-four thousand were killed, wounded and missing. Isn’t it strange that a battle as bloody as that would begin on a Sunday morning and be named after a country church near the battlefield? It was fought near the Tennessee River. Battle of Stones River: The Battle of Stones River was fought from December 31st to January 2, 1863, near Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and claimed 23,000 casualties. It was the second bloodiest battle fought west of the Appalachians during the Civil War. The river was so low that it could be crossed by the infantry anywhere. Soldiers picked cotton from along the road to stuff in their ears to shut out the sounds of the battle.
